Born in Algiers in 1972, Souad Massi grew up between Kabyle song from Bab El Oued, folk guitar, and chaâbi. After her formative years with the rock band Atakor, she moved to Paris in the late 1990s and released Raoui in 2001, a landmark record of a delicate Algerian songwriting in the first person. Her work moves between classical Arabic poetry (El Mutakallimûn), American folk, and French chanson, making her one of the most listened-to voices of the Algerian diaspora in Europe.
